Swine flu Prevention
with so many different stories about
swine flu or H1N1 circulating it is difficult to know what to believe anymore. The scientists, government and of course your conspiracy theorists all have there own views on swine flu and ways in which to prevent it. I on the other hand believe in good honest common sense.
Just like any other virus, contact with people with a virus poses a risk to you and your close ones. Vaccination is of course a prevention method but what can you do as an individual to minimise the risks around you. Companies who make face masks are having a great time in the recession, so why would they say you shouldn't buy one.
That's all well and good but personally I don't think we are at that stage yet and nor would we be if people where just a little more cautious. Simple steps like keeping a clean home and washing your hands regularly could stop this turning into a serious pandemic, if you suspect you have swine flu then do the right thing and avoid contact with other people where you can.
General symptoms of swine flu are fever, tiredness, cough and sore throat. Other symptoms include headache, aching muscles, chills, sneezing, a runny nose, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. These are just a guide different people will experience some of or all of these symptoms to some degree. Swine Flu generally lasts around one week although this can dramatically differ depending on your immune system some reports suggest up to 3 weeks.
Swine Flu is a very real risk so whatever your opinion on the media hype you should still take precautions. The first mention of swine flu was back in 1976 although there are many contradictory story's behind the events which took place, One thing for sure, it did take place and people did die.
Although Swine Flu is contagious it can be easily destroyed when not in the body .Inevitably just going about our daily life's we will be touching surface's shaking hands and breathing the same air as everybody else, your hands are said to contain more germs than a dogs mouth, So think carefully when eating your KFC and try to avoid any hand to food contact.
Keep hand wipes in a handy place like in your car or handbag, dispose of them promptly after use and clean your hands with soap and water at the first available opportunity avoiding touching your face or mouth. These are the same rules we would apply to toilet manners, just common sense.
Basic washroom cleaning prevents infection from a range of pathogenic microorganisms that could potentially kill us, these germs are always present in and around the home, they may from time to time cause you to have cold like symptoms which is not really a problem we are all prone to the common cold, but having an already weakened immune system will prolong your recovery from such virus's as Swine flu.
You could not eradicate germs completely from your home or from our lives it's very much an integral part of our existence on this planet to start with. Just being aware of the correct cleaning practices should see you through. Bacteria preform and live longer on any hard surface especially if wet, this makes for an ideal breeding ground on your kitchen work tops and tiles, any contaminated materials such as clothing, pillows and bedding should be washed immediately if you suspect swine flu.
Some less obvious things to keep clean include your car steering wheel, car radio, door handles, and the one you are using right now, your keyboard, especially if you have a work or shared computer. There is no shame in taking a hand sanitizer or gel into work for you and your colleagues to share. Simple steps can dramatically reduce risk to infection.
One of the most challenging things is to teach your children not to touch, this is almost like a "Don't push the red button scenario" and is testing at the best of times, but training creates habits such as cover your mouth when coughing, wipe your feet at the door etc. Before long we all adopt these habits.
Most people tend to keep away from public toilets but when you have to go you have to go, Be aware not everyone is thoughtful enough to wash there hands before pushing the door open or using the lock.
To summarise "Use your common sense" and point out to other's when they are not using there's. Don't get me wrong some people just don't have it to start with, but education is a staircase we can all climb.
